it would be nice to have some subsurface scattering on the candle. Looks very plastic when it's so opace.

The dusty version is best. Traveling is about the passage of time, of history, of places seen . All the objects in the image speak of time passing, of ancient maps and old photographs. So new and shiny is out of place. Great render either way but dusty is better :)

I'm choosing this over the dusty version, only because the sense of abandonment doesn't fit for such a scene (imo). But from a strictly technical perspective, the dusty version wins. Very smart use of that map.
I was considering doing something like this, but after seeing your render, I know I wouldn't have done it better. Congrats :D
